Short & direct
In the Zürich area, an air-to-water heat pump for a single-family house costs roughly CHF 30,000 to 45,000 including installation, while a ground-source heat pump with a borehole runs around CHF 45,000 to 70,000. Cantonal and municipal subsidies often reduce this by several thousand francs. The exact figure depends on the building, heat load and system – we calculate it for you free of charge.
When an old oil or gas heater needs replacing, the first question is usually about heat pump cost. The good news: thanks to subsidies and low running costs, switching in the Zürich area and the Limmattal pays off faster than many people expect.
Heat pump cost at a glance
The purchase price depends heavily on the system and the building. As rough guidance – not a fixed price – the following ranges apply to a typical single-family house:
- Air-to-water heat pump: around CHF 30,000 to 45,000 including installation. It is the most common option because no borehole is required.
- Ground-source heat pump: around CHF 45,000 to 70,000 including the borehole. It runs particularly efficiently but needs a geothermal borehole and a permit.
- Removal and disposal of the old oil or gas heater, plus adjustments to pipework and radiators, are added depending on the situation.
Tip: Switching from radiators to underfloor heating or larger low-temperature radiators gets more efficiency out of any heat pump.
Which subsidies are available?
The federal government, the Canton of Zürich and many municipalities subsidise replacing fossil heating with a heat pump. The amounts change regularly but are often in the range of several thousand francs – especially when switching from oil or gas. The investment can usually also be deducted from your taxes.

Running costs: where you save long-term
The higher purchase price is offset in operation. A modern heat pump turns one kilowatt-hour of electricity into three to four kilowatt-hours of heat. Compared with oil or gas, annual heating costs often drop significantly – and you become less dependent on fluctuating fuel prices and the CO₂ levy.
When switching is especially worthwhile
- Your oil or gas heater is more than 15 years old or facing an expensive repair.
- You are already planning a heating renovation or a remodel.
- You want to cut heating costs and CO₂ long-term and increase your property value.
